One in three young people who had a body piercing experienced medical problems.

Although the most common complications were swelling and infection, other problems included blood poisoning and serious bleeding.

One per cent were forced to seek medical advice or go to hospital because of their piercing.

Health experts warned last night that the boom in body art could 'place a significant burden on health services for many years'.

The survey by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine revealed a quarter of the 10,503 adults questioned had problems with their piercings.

Those aged 16 to 24 were found to be most at risk, with 31 per cent reporting infections or serious bleeding.

Around 15 per cent also admitted seeking medical advice because of complications.

The study also showed that while four out of five piercings were carried out in licensed shops, a worrying 9 per cent were performed by non-specialists.
